We Should Not Get Discouraged If We Have Enemies

By Lizzie Ducking | Submitted On February 19, 2011

Normally no one want to have enemies because when we think of enemies we would think of it in a negative manner but actually having enemies can be a good thing.

A while back, a Pastor and I were discussing a scripture in Psalm 23. It was verse five and it said you (God) prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. This Pastor said that we have to have enemies in order for the Lord to prepare a table for us in their presence. If they were not there then the Lord could not prepare a table for us. I had never heard it put that way before and after considering what he said I said "then bring on the enemies".

Jesus also said in Matthew 5:10 blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Now we are not to go outside and throw a brick into our neighbor's home in order for us to get an enemy, this is not for righteousness sake. He will only prepare a table for us in the presence of our enemies if we are righteous.

He said for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Those that are persecuted for His namesake will have a table prepared for them by the Lord.

The Apostles and the early Church suffered much persecution for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. They had many enemies along the way but the Gospel of Christ prevailed and now we are enjoying the fruit of their labor. He prepared this table of Salvation for us through their righteousness. If their enemies had prevailed, the Gospel would not have been preached and we would not be saved.

Jesus also said in Matthew 5:11-12 blessed are you when they revile and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad for great is your reward in Heaven for so they persecuted the Prophets who were before you. Not only will the Lord prepare a table before us in the presence of our enemies but He has also reserved a reward for us in Heaven for suffering such persecution.

Jesus called us blessed when we are persecuted for His namesake. Because He said it, that would mean that there is something good in persecution that far out weights the persecution (itself) so we should rejoice and be glad when we are hated for Christ sake.

He also said not to fear what man could do to us because greater is He that is in us than he that is in the World. We have divine protection from the Lord. His protection is also a prepared table so our enemies cannot do us any harm.

We should not be downhearted when we are hated because Christ lives in us, instead we should count it all joy because a table is prepared for us and a reward is waiting for us when we get to Heaven.
